What Is Flight Training Like at Archerfield Airport?
You need somewhere that allows you to develop the fundamental skill of flying an aircraft, but also exposes you progressively to air traffic control, other aircraft, changing weather, different aerodromes and the decisions that come with operating in a real aviation environment.
Archerfield Airport provides that combination.
It is an established centre for flight training and general aviation in Brisbane, with multiple flying schools and aviation businesses based at the airport. During tower hours, Archerfield operates within Class D controlled airspace, giving students regular experience communicating and operating with air traffic control.
At Basair, we use that environment to develop more than aircraft handling skills. Our aim is to develop the knowledge, judgement and professional behaviours students will need throughout their aviation careers.

Learn to fly at a controlled airport
One of the advantages of training at Archerfield is that students become accustomed to operating with air traffic control from the beginning of their training.
Before departure, there may be taxi instructions to understand, other aircraft to monitor and a clearance to obtain. In the circuit, students need to maintain an accurate flight path while listening to ATC, watching traffic and anticipating what is likely to happen next.
Initially, your instructor helps manage much of this workload.
As your experience increases, responsibility progressively transfers to you.
Over time, communicating with air traffic control stops feeling like a separate exercise and simply becomes part of flying the aircraft.
That is an important transition for someone intending to become a professional pilot.
Brisbane is also a great place to learn to fly
For students relocating for flight training, the location of the airport matters outside the cockpit as well.
Archerfield is located within metropolitan Brisbane, giving students access to a major Australian city while training at a dedicated general aviation airport. Basair operates its Brisbane campus from Archerfield Airport and offers Commercial Pilot Licence, Instrument Rating and Flight Instructor pathways from the location.
Queensland’s climate also provides extensive opportunities for year-round flying, while still exposing students to the changing weather conditions that pilots need to understand and manage.
Learn to fly in Brisbane weather
Queensland has a climate that suits flight training particularly well.
Brisbane’s subtropical weather provides long periods of good flying conditions, especially through the cooler and drier months. At Archerfield, winter and early spring are typically the driest part of the year, while daytime temperatures remain mild — average maximum temperatures are still around 21–25°C between June and September.
That means students can spend a significant amount of time doing what they came to flight school to do: fly.
But good flight training should not take place in perfectly predictable weather.
As the Queensland summer approaches, the atmosphere becomes warmer, more humid and more active. Students can see cloud developing through the day, experience changing winds, showers and convective weather, and learn to recognise when seemingly good conditions may deteriorate later. South East Queensland receives more of its rainfall during the warmer part of the year, while severe thunderstorms are a recognised feature of the region’s summer weather.
For a developing pilot, this creates an excellent classroom.
Students learn to interpret forecasts rather than simply read them. They learn to look at radar, cloud development, wind and temperature and ask what those conditions mean for the flight they are planning. They also see how weather affects aircraft performance, fuel planning, route selection and the decision to depart, continue, divert or wait.
The result is an environment that provides plenty of opportunity to fly, but also plenty of opportunity to learn.
A blue Queensland winter morning teaches you how enjoyable aviation can be.
A developing summer afternoon teaches you something equally important: when a professional pilot needs to change the plan.

Can I learn to fly at Archerfield Airport with no previous experience?
Yes. Basair’s Commercial Pilot Licence course is designed for students with little or no previous flying experience.
Training begins with fundamental aircraft handling and progresses through first solo, navigation, licence-level competencies and increasingly demanding commercial operations. Students progressively develop not only flying skills, but aviation knowledge, decision-making and the professional behaviours required for a career as a pilot.
If you would like to experience flying before committing to professional training, you can also complete a Trial Instructional Flight from Archerfield Airport.
More than a training airport
Archerfield is not simply a place to conduct flying lessons. It is one of Brisbane’s major general aviation precincts, with a wide range of aviation businesses and services operating alongside flight training.
